How to restore faded suede shoes

Without proper care, suede shoes can become a bit rough looking. Keeping your suede shoes in the best condition is about maintenance and pre-emptive action. Protective spray will keep your suede in good condition for a few months, but spraying them on a one-off basis or at irregular intervals is not enough. Being a sensitive material, suede needs to be well cared for.

Get into a good routine early and stick to it. However, the odds are if you’ve clicked this guide then you’ve read our advice too late. Worry not, we have some advice on how to restore your faded suede shoes below.

Please note, this is not a major refurbishment guide though but rather some quick steps to spruce up your faded suede shoes. Follow these steps when your suede shoes are looking slightly worse for wear and check out our ultimate guide to looking after suede for further advice on suede shoe care.

Prepare shoes

As with most shoe restorations/cleaning, you will want to remove the shoelaces and insert a shoe tree. We recommend the cedarwood shoe tree.

Brush shoes

A normal leather brush is quite stiff and can damage the suede. Invest in a suede brush with nylon bristles and rubber tips for removing stubborn stains and dirt. Take your suede brush and gently brush away any dirt that is trapped within the fibres of your shoes. It’s important to brush in the direction of the fibres rather than going back and forth, as this can damage your shoes.

Remove scuff marks

Remove any scuff marks by gently rubbing an eraser back and forth over a scuff or stain until it lifts, then sweep away any eraser shavings with your suede brush. You can do this with a suede eraser or in a pinch a pencil eraser will do

Clean shoes

Use a small brush to clean the side and soles of your shoes with a cream cleaner.
